A.R. Rahman (Allah Rakha Rahman) is an Indian Music Composer, Record Producer, Singer & Songwriter. He was Born on 6 January, 1967. He is known as one of the best music composers of India. He was born in Madras (Now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. His father was also a music composer of tamil and Malayalam films. Rahman started learning Piano at the age of Four. He used to assist his father in the studio by playing keyboard. His father died when he was 9 years old, they rented his father’s musical equipments for their livelihood. He was then raised by his mother Kareema. He started working to support his family. He used to work as a keyboard player.
Later he dropped out of school to pursue a career as a full time musician, he started playing keyboard in a band named Root with his childhood friends and then founded a rock group Nemesis Avenue. He also got a scholarship to study at Trinity College, Oxford, where he received a degree in Western classical music.
He then started making jingles for advertisements, he told that it taught him discipline as making jingles require delivery of powerful mesaage in short time. In 1992, he met tamil film director Mani Ratnam who approached him to make music for his film Roja. It became a huge hit. He also received National Film Award of best music director for Roja. He then did more successful scores for Tamil–language films of the Chennai film industry including Bombay, Kadhalan, Karuththamma and the romantic comedies Mr. Romeo and Love Birds, which gained him considerable notice.
He made his bollywood debut from the film Rangeela directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Followed by more successful songs for fims like Dil Se & Taal. Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se become huge hit and is considered one of the best songs. He then composed music for many popular films as Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Swades. He also worked with great Indian Poets & Lyircists such as Javed Akhtar, Gulzar & Vaali.
Later he launched his own music label KM Music. His score for his first Hollywood film Couples Retreat won him BMI London award for Best Score. His songs for the movie Slumdog Millionaire won him a Golden Globe & two Academy Awards. And its songs ‘Jai Ho’ & ‘o…Saya’ became huge hit. His songs for the movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na became popular among Youngsters songs like ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi’ & ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Saala’.
He is not only a good music composer but also a great singer, he has sung some of the most iconic songs such as Urvasi from Kadhalan movie, Maa Tujhe Salaam, Dil Se Re, Khwaja Mere Khwaja & Jai Ho. He has sung many more songs.
He is considered as one of the best musicians of India. For many he is an inspiration. He is an introvert guy who worked for so many years in this industry without any controversy, he just believes in his work and makes people fall in love with his music. He is such a down to earth person without any ego or attitude, he only do what makes him happy.
He has some of the best quotes on music ‘If music wakes you, makes you think, heals you.. then I guess the music is working’. He is the only Indian to win 2 Oscars on the same night. His life inspired many people to work for their passion not only this but also how a small town boy came to known worldwide by just following his passion. He changed the preference of music in whole India previously people hesitate to pursue their career in music industry but now they are following their passion.
