If you are a musician then you know the importance of Scales, having a proper knowledge of scales helps in playing any instrument easily. For a guitar learner Scales become very important as it helps in playing tabs of any song and also the chords for the song. So, a Scale is a group of notes placed sequentially by their pitch. These group of notes are played individually.

Today we are going to learn A Major Scale and how do we find out a Major Scale using Major Scale formula. So firstly Major Scale consists of Seven Notes placed sequentially in an octave. We can find any Major Scale just by using a simple Formula.

Formula for Major Scale :- W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Here W is Whole Step which means there is a Fret Gap between two Notes and H is Half Step means there is no gap between two Notes. Let us take a look at how we can find out A Major Scale.

A  A#  B  C  C#  D  D#  E  F  F#  G  G#

I have written down all the notes that are in the music theory, it will be easier for us to now look at scales. So our formula for Major Scale is W-W-H-W-W-W-H.

  • In A Major Scale the first note will be our Base Note that is A.
  • Moving forward we have a Whole Step so we have to skip one Note that is A# Note our next note is B Note.
  • Then we have a Whole Step so after B we skip one note that is C Note so our next Note will be C# Note.
  • Then we have a Half Step so after C# Note without skipping any note the next Note is D Note.
  • We have got 4 Notes let’s move ahead after D we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is D# Note we get E Note.
  • Moving ahead we have again Whole Step so after E Note we skip one note that is F Note our next note will be F# Note.
  • Then we have one more Whole Step so after F# we skip one more note that is G Note we get G# Note
  • We have got all our seven notes of but still there is one more step to go so let’s check did we get our Base Note repeated or not, we have a Half Step here so after G# Note without skipping any note our next Note will be A Note which is our Base Note. Hence we have successfully managed to get our A Major Scale, all the Notes that we have found are :-

A Major Scale :- A  B  C#  D  E  F#  G#  A

Last note is repeated back again.

Thus by using this way we can easily find any Major Scales we wanted, just apply the same Formula and follow the Notes. Those who wanted to learn all Major Scales and how each scale are found can go through this article Major Scales In Guitar.
