If you are a musician then you know the importance of Scales, having a proper knowledge of scales helps in playing any instrument easily. For a guitar learner Scales become very important as it helps in playing tabs of any song and also the chords for the song. So, a Scale is a group of notes placed sequentially by their pitch. These group of notes are played individually.

Today we are going to learn C# Minor Scale and how do we find out a Minor Scale using Minor Scale formula. So firstly Minor Scale consists of Seven Notes placed sequentially in an octave. We can find any Minor Scale just by using a simple Formula.

Formula for Minor Scale is :- W-H-W-W-H-W-W

Here W stands for Whole Step & H stands for Half Step, these are the distance between one note to other. Whole Step means there is a difference of 1 fret between 2 notes for example:- if we play 1st string 1st fret its F Major Note then the whole step to this note will be 1st string 3rd fret as we need difference of 1 fret between them so the note will be G note as we skip one note between F & G that is F#.

Similarly in case of Half Step there is no skipping of Fret between notes the next Fret note is considered as Half Step, let us look at same example :- if we if we play 1st string 1st fret its F Major note so the Half Step for this note will be just next Fret note which is 1st string 2nd Fret that is F# Major, here we did not skipped any Fret as we moved from 1st to 2nd Fret.

Now lets see the C# Minor Scale.

A  A#  B  C  C#  D  D#  E  F  F#  G  G#

Similarly here too I have written down all the notes so that it will be easier to find out the Notes for Minor Scale. Formula for Minor Scale is :- W-H-W-W-H-W-W.

  • So, let’s start our first note will be C# as it’s the Base Note for C# Minor Scale.
  • Now according to formula there is a Whole Step so, a whole step from C# Note after skipping one note D our next note will be D# Note.
  • Now we have a Half Step so from the Note D# without skipping any note the next will be E Note.
  • We have got our 3 notes, moving ahead there is a Whole Step so skipping one note that is F our next Note will be F# Note.
  • Now we have again a Whole Step so, the after skipping one note after F# that is G Note our next Note will be G# Note.
  • We have got our 5 notes until now let’s move ahead. Now we have a Half Step so a Half Step after G# without skipping a Note will be A Note.
  • Now we have again a Whole Step so after A Note skip one note that is A# our next Note will be B Note.
  • So, now we have got all our notes of C# Minor Scale but still there is one more step to go so let’s do it too and check whether our Base Note repeats or not. So, we have one more Whole Step here so a Whole Step from B we skip one more note that is C our Final Step comes C# Note that is our Base Note. It means we have successfully managed to get all the notes of C# Minor Scale. So, all the notes of C# Minor Scale are :-

C# Minor Scale :- C#  D#  E  F#  G#  A  B  C#

Last note is repeated back again.

In the similar way we can find out all the Minor Scales, all we need to know is all the 12 notes that is A  A#  B  C  C#  D  D#  E  F  F#  G  G# and Minor Scale Formula W-H-W-W-H-W-W and then we just need to apply these into any scale we want and follow all the steps as we have done above. These Scales will help us a lot in learning more about music as How to find the tabs of any song or chords of any song and also in understanding how a song is composed. Learning these scales will also help in detail understanding of music theory related to modes, pentatonic scales, blues, jazz etc.
