This article is on Major Scales In Guitar.

Everybody wants to learn guitar but do you know what’s the right way. Some people just learn only for fun or just to impress someone but actually the people who genuinely want to learn it and make a career into it needs the right direction to learn it. Many people just know some chords and they stayed onto them only without knowing any music theory. So, in order to learn guitar properly one must also know about the music theory which includes scales and other things.

So today we are gonna look at What are major Scales ? and How to find any Major Scales In Guitar ?

For understanding Major Scale we must firstly understand What are Scales?

A Scale is a group of notes placed sequentially by their pitch. These notes are played individually. These notes are played in ascending order(increasing the pitch) or descending order(decreasing the pitch). The notes thus used in a scale are differentiated by distance or intervals. These intervals makes a perfect scale.

So, from above definition we come to know that a group of notes is known as scale. In music there are majorly two most common type of scales used. They are Major Scale and Minor Scale. Today we are going to understand Major Scales.

Major Scales consist of seven notes placed sequentially in an octave, these notes can be find out using a simple formula (which we will discuss). These notes are played along with the root note to form a Major Scale. So, let us have a look at the formula of Major Scale along with C Major Scale(we will discuss all major scales notes deeply).

Formula for Major Scale is W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Here W stands for Whole Step & H stands for Half Step, these are the distance between one note to other. Whole Step means there is a difference of 1 fret between 2 notes for example:- if we play 1^st string 1^st fret its F Major Note then the whole step to this note will be 1^st string 3^rd fret as we need difference of 1 fret between them so the note will be G note as we skip one note between F & G that is F#(see in the image).

Similarly in case of Half Step there is no skipping of Fret between notes the next Fret note is considered as Half Step, let us look at same example :- if we if we play 1^st string 1^st fret its F Major note so the Half Step for this note will be just next Fret note which is 1^st string 2^nd Fret that is F# Major, here we did not skipped any Fret as we moved from 1^st to 2^nd Fret(see in the image).

Now lets see the C Major Scale.

A  A#  B  C  C#  D  D#  E  F  F#  G  G#

I have written down all the notes that are in the music theory, it will be easier for us to now look at scales. So our formula for Major Scale is W-W-H-W-W-W-H.

• In C Major Scale the first note will be base Note so it’s C Note.
• Now according to formula we have first whole step, now we have to move from C and skip one note(look at all the notes written above) after C there is C# which we have to skip so our next note will be D Note.
• We have done one step now let’s move to another we have again a whole step so after D we have D# note which we have to skip so our next note will be E Note.
• We have got 3 notes of our major scales until now C D E lets move ahead now we have a Half Step which means this time we do not have to skip any note so after E Note our next Note will be F Note as F comes just next to E.
• Let’s move ahead then we have a Whole Step so after F we skip one note that is F# so the next note of our scale will be G.
• Next is again a Whole Step after G skip one note that is G# so our next note will be A.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so after A skip one note that is A# we have our another note that is B Note.
• We have got all of our Seven notes of Major Scale but still there is also a last step left this is for the root note of another Octave (Means same base note but in different octave) so after B note we have one Half Step so the next note to B is C Note. Thus, this completes our C Major Scale. Let us have a look at all the notes we have find out. These are :-

C Major Scale :- C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C

Last note is repeated back again.

Thus in this way we can find our Major Scale for any Note. Now lets look at all the remaining scales starting from A Major.

A Major Scale

• In A Major Scale the first note will be our Base Note that is A.
• Moving forward we have a Whole Step so we have to skip one Note that is A# Note our next note is B Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after B we skip one note that is C Note so our next Note will be C# Note.
• Then we have a Half Step so after C# Note without skipping any note the next Note is D Note.
• We have got 4 Notes of A Major Scale lets move ahead after D we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is D# Note we get E Note.
• Moving ahead we have again Whole Step so after E Note we skip one note that is F Note our next note will be F# Note.
• Then we have one more Whole Step so after F# we skip one more note that is G Note we get G# Note
• We have got all our seven notes of A Major Scale but still there is one more step to go so lets check did we get our Base Note repeated or not, we have a Half Step here so after G# Note without skipping any note our next Note will be A Note which is our Base Note. Hence we have successfully managed to get our A Major Scale, all the Notes that we have found are :-

A Major Scale :- A  B  C#  D  E  F#  G#  A

Now we see our next Major Scales In Guitar that is A#.

A# Major Scale

• In A# Major Scale our first note will be A# as it’s the Base Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so we have to skip one Fret that is B Note, our next Note will be C Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so after C Note we have to skip one Note that is C# so our next Note will be D Note.
• Moving ahead we have a Half Step this time we don’t have to skip any fret so after D our next Note will be D# Note.
• Now we have a Whole Step so skipping one Fret that is E Note we get F Note.
• We have again a Whole Step so we have to skip one Fret that is F# Note our next note will be G Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping one note after G that is G# our next note is A Note.
• We have found all our seven notes of A# Major Scale but there is one more step to go lets do it too so, we have a Half Step so without skipping any fret we have our next note as A# Note which is our Base Note.
• We have successfully managed to get our A# Major Scale. So, all the notes of A# Major Scale are as follows :-

A# Major Scale :- A#  C  D  D#  F  G  A  A#

Now our next Major Scales In Guitar will be B.

B Major Scale

• The first note of B Major Scale will be B Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After B Note we skip one note that is C Note our next note will be C# Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step skipping one note that is D Note we get our 3^rd note that is D# Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after D# our next note will be E Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is F Note we get our next note that is F# Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after F# Note we skip one note that is G Note we get G# Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is A Note our next note will be A# Note.
• Now we have got all our seven notes but still there one more step to go so let’s check whether our base note repeats or not. We have a Half Step now so after A# Note without skipping any note we get B Note that is our Base Note.
• So we have easily find out our B Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

B Major Scale :- B  C#  D#  E  F#  G#  A#  B

Next is C Major Scale which we have done above.

Now we see our next Major Scales In Guitar that is C#.

C# Major Scale

• The first note of C# Major Scale will be C# Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After C# Note we skip one note that is D Note our next note will be D# Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after D# we skip one note that is E Note so our next Note will be F Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after F our next note will be F# Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is G Note we get our next note that is G# Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after G# Note we skip one note that is A Note we get A# Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is B Note our next note will be C Note.
• Now we have got all our seven notes but still there one more step to go so let’s check whether our base note repeats or not. We have a Half Step now so after C Note without skipping any note we get C# Note that is our Base Note.
• So we have easily find out our C# Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

C# Major Scale :- C#  D#  F  F#  G#  A#  C  C#

Lets move ahead our next Major Scales In Guitar is D.

D Major Scale

• The first note of D Major Scale will be D Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After D Note we skip one note that is D# Note our next note will be E Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after E we skip one note that is F Note so our next Note will be F# Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after F# our next note will be G Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is G# Note we get our next note that is A Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after A Note we skip one note that is A# Note we get B Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is C Note our next note will be C# Note.
• Now we have got all our seven notes but still there one more step to go so let’s check whether our base note repeats or not. We have a Half Step now so after C# Note without skipping any note we get D Note that is our Base Note.
• So we have easily find out our D Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

D Major Scale :- D  E  F#  G  A  B  C#  D

Next Major Scales In Guitar we have is D#

D# Major Scale

• The first note of D# Major Scale will be D# Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After D# Note we skip one note that is E Note our next note will be F Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after F we skip one note that is F# Note so our next Note will be G Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after G our next note will be G# Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is A Note we get our next note that is A# Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after A# Note we skip one note that is B Note we get C Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is C# Note our next note will be D Note.
• Now we have got all our seven notes but still there one more step to go so let’s check whether our base note repeats or not. We have a Half Step now so after D Note without skipping any note we get D# Note that is our Base Note.
• So we have easily find out our D# Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

Next Major Scales In Guitar is E

E Major Scale

• The first note of E Major Scale will be E Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After E Note we skip one note that is F Note our next note will be F# Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after F# we skip one note that is G Note so our next Note will be G# Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after G# our next note will be A Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is A# Note we get our next note that is B Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after B Note we skip one note that is C Note we get C# Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is D Note our next note will be D# Note.
• Now we have got all our seven notes but still there one more step to go so let’s check whether our base note repeats or not. We have a Half Step now so after D# Note without skipping any note we get E Note that is our Base Note.
• So we have easily find out our E Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

Moving ahead our next Major Scales In Guitar is F

F Major Scale

• The first note of F Major Scale will be F Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After F Note we skip one note that is F# Note our next note will be G Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after G we skip one note that is G# Note so our next Note will be A Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after A our next note will be A# Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is B Note we get our next note that is C Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after C Note we skip one note that is C# Note we get D Note.
• Moving ahead we have one more Whole Step so skipping another note that is D# Note our next note will be E Note.

• So we have easily find out our F Major Scale. Let’s look at all the notes we have find :-

Our next Major Scales In Guitar will be F#

F# Major Scale

• The first note of F# Major Scale will be F# Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After F# Note we skip one note that is G Note our next note will be G# Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after G# we skip one note that is A Note so our next Note will be A# Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after A# our next note will be B Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is C Note we get our next note that is C# Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step again so after C# Note we skip one note that is D Note we get D# Note.

G Major Scale

• The first note of G Major Scale will be G Note as it’s the Base Note.
• Next we have a Whole Step so After G Note we skip one note that is G# Note our next note will be A Note.
• Then we have a Whole Step so after A we skip one note that is A# Note so our next Note will be B Note.
• Now there is a Half Step so without skipping any Fret after B our next note will be C Note.
• We have got our 4 notes now let’s move ahead we have a Whole Step so skipping one note that is C# Note we get our next note that is D Note.
